Consumer unit & fuse board upgrades

Replacement of old fuse boxes and consumer units with modern metal-clad units, RCBO or RCD protection and surge protection, tested and certified with Building Regulations notification.

When a consumer unit upgrade is needed

  • Rewireable fuses or no RCD protection for socket and bathroom circuits
  • A plastic consumer unit showing damage, or an installation flagged on an EICR
  • Adding circuits for EV chargers, heat pumps, solar PV or batteries
  • Nuisance tripping on an old split-load RCD board

Our guides on RCD vs RCBO and rewireable fuses vs modern consumer units explain the options.

What is included

Every replacement includes pre-installation testing of the existing circuits, a non-combustible enclosure, RCBO or dual-RCD protection, surge protection where required, full testing, an Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Regulations notification through our competent person scheme.

FAQ

Consumer unit upgrades: frequently asked questions

How much does a consumer unit replacement cost?

Most domestic replacements fall roughly between £450 and £1,200 depending on the number of circuits, RCBO versus dual-RCD protection, surge protection and any faults found during testing. We give a fixed price after survey.

Is a fuse box with rewireable fuses illegal?

No. Rewireable fuses are not illegal, but an EICR will usually record a lack of RCD protection as an observation, and replacement is often the most practical fix.

How long does a consumer unit change take?

Typically a day for a standard house, with power off for most of that time.
