Who needs emergency lighting testing?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats and most HMOs, must make sure emergency routes and exits are adequately lit and that fire safety equipment is maintained. BS 5266-1 is the code of practice used to design, test and maintain emergency lighting so that it meets that duty.
Testing schedule
| Test | Frequency | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Function test | Monthly | A brief simulated mains failure to confirm every luminaire and exit sign lights from its battery |
| Full duration test | Annually | A full rated-duration discharge, typically 3 hours, to prove batteries still hold their charge |
| Certification | Annually and after alterations | Periodic inspection certificate and log book update |
